Becoming a parent is a joyful moment, but it also presents challenges and mental health concerns. Research indicates that approximately one in five mothers and one in ten fathers experience mental illness during pregnancy and the first year of their baby’s life. Perinatal and infant mental health focuses on nurturing the emotional well-being of both parents and infants. The transition to parenthood involves shifts in relationships, roles, and attachment dynamics. Feelings of loneliness and inadequate social support can contribute to depressive symptoms. Parental mental illness has far-reaching effects on families and support systems. Unfortunately many parents struggle silently due to stigma and limited access to services.

The “Healthy Minds” project aims to address these gaps by identifying areas for improvement, enhancing early detection, and facilitating better access to services. Our collaborative and multidisciplinary team will delve into perinatal mental health, shape supportive services, implement targeted interventions, and rigorously evaluate their effectiveness. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance the overall well-being of families in the region.
