COPMI stands for “Children of Parents with a Mental Illness”, i.e. children of parents with a mental illness. These children often need additional support in order to lead a happy and healthy life. However, such support services are often either not available or not found by the families concerned, which can have long-term negative effects on the children.
Our previous project “Village – How to raise the village to raise the child” aimed to improve the identification and support of COPMI and to build and strengthen both informal and formal support networks around the child. Working closely with various stakeholders, we developed supportive measures, integrated them into existing networks and carried out comprehensive evaluations. The focus was always on the needs of the children and young people.

We are very happy to share with you a very special sub-project of the Village Project: our child-friendly report! This report is not a classic research report, but was designed explicitly for children. In the form of a sensitive, lovingly illustrated comic, it explains what mental illness is, how it can affect family life and how our project was able to provide help. It was really important to us to present our research results in a way that is suitable for children, accessible and, above all, sensitive. The content includes..
- what mental illness can mean
- that children are not to blame for their parents’ illness
- what everyday life of affected children looks like
- what can help them feel more secure and seen
- how the Village Project has helped with small and big changes
The comic is based on conversations, playful and creative methods with children from Tyrol, whose families participated in the Village Project, and is available in German and English.
